Ziro valley
Ziro is a town famous for its beautiful valley named Ziro Valley. It is a place where everyone is magnetized by its beauty and hypnotic view of paddy fields. The place is good for those who want to experience jungle campaigns, trekking, and also for those who love music. Every year in September, the ziro festival is organized in the ziro valley in the north Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is an outdoor festival which is known for music and hence it is named as FESTIVAL OF MUSIC. Ziro fest was founded by Bobby Hano in 2012 and has featured many artists who perform live. This fest showcases the independent music scene in India, where local music bands and also different classical music bands from all over India perform and showcases their talent. The festival goes on for 4 days and is hosted by a tribal group called as Apatani people in Ziro.
Ziro fest is the eco-friendliest festival in India which aims to use only locally sourced material – Bamboo. The people who live here, have opted for zero plastic policy so that environment will be protected. The stage of Ziro fest where live performances are performed is also completely made up of Bamboo.
how to reach ziro ?
To reach Ziro is the most difficult and adventurous part depending on how you actually want to travel. Ziro can only be reached by road. Road conditions are not very good after Naharlagun so you need to be mentally well-prepared. To cover a distance of 98 Kms it will take 4-5 Hours to reach Ziro depending on the traffic. The nearest railway station is Naharlagun where the railway route is connected to Guwahati. Ziro is at a distance of 98 kms from Naharlagun. The nearest airport is Lilabari Airport which is 44 km away from Naharlagun but is not very well connected with other cities. Naharlagun is 340 kms away from Guwahati which will be your first layover stop.
The best option to reach Ziro –
Reach Guwahati by Plane/Train >>>>> Take a train from Guwahati to Naharlagun >>>>> Take a Taxi from Naharlagun to Ziro
We were coming from Meghalaya where we did an amazing bike road trip before heading towards Ziro Fest. If you want to read about Meghalaya then click here
Note : You can rent a Car/Bike directly from Guwahati and head towards Ziro by taking a layover at Itanagar or Naharlagun. Itanagar is the closest big city to Ziro which is around 116 Kms. If you are stuck somewhere in your Car/Bike then Itanagar is where you can find help for replacing faulty/damaged parts of your vehicle.
You need to have an Inner Line Permit to enter Ziro. ILP is needed to enter any city in Arunachal Pradesh (Click here for ILP Link)
You need to have the local reference details of someone who is residing in Arunachal Pradesh. In our case, we had booked Chalo Hoppo which provided us with details for local reference.
village walk
There are many activities which are provided by the camp in which you are staying. We were staying at the Chalo Hoppo campsite which is the most famous campy site every year due to its marketing strategy.
Activities :
1. Farm fishing with locals
2. Village Walk
3. Various local wine tasting served in bamboo
4. Old Ziro walk around
Many travelers did fishing and did catch big fish which were present in paddy fields. This is one of the most unique experiences one can do. We opted out for a village walk. It was raining cats and dogs during our walk but the atmosphere was so amazing when we were walking through paddy fields and local markets. Wine tasting in India is still something that is not explored much. It was great fun to taste all wines. Even the local village house we visited was making local wines and we are allowed to taste them.
ziro fest
Where to start about the experience of Ziro Fest. This will be the best decision you ever took to visit a place so magical it gives you inner happiness. One cannot express the feeling of a live concert for that you will have to visit and do it on your own.
There are many foods, liquor, and shopping stalls in the main activity ground. Be prepared to walk a lot because there may be a possibility that your campsite is far away from the main ground and if it is raining then the whole path becomes where muddy to walk. If you go there without any vehicle as we did then it can be a big headache to walk long distances every time you want to be at your favorite artist’s performance. Our campsite was the last one which was around 2-3 km one way.
Note – Beware of the leech. There are many leeches present on the main ground as well as on the campsite. I had never experienced a leech bite before but on the very first day of experiencing a live performance, I found one leech inside my shoe. It was a very big leech and it had bitten me in 2 different areas. Since then I have a big phobia of the leech. For the remaining days, I was not wearing any shoes and was on slippers so that I can watch them. I was so terrified that every 5 minutes I used to switch on my mobile torch and check my legs for any leech. I did get one more leech in my campsite which was just climbing up my legs but thankfully it was a small one, so I got rid of it very quickly.
In 2019 Ziro Fest, it was a very impressive artists lineup – Chochung Dema, Dreamhour, Karma, Acid Mothers Temple, Arit Rao, Ouzo Bazooka, Still Waters, and many more. Apart from Indian artists, there were International artists band from Indonesia & Japan. And the biggest of them all was the Man Himself – Lucky ALi.
Ziro Fest goes on for 4 Days. The performance starts from noon onwards and continues the whole day till night midnight. It’s all about your preferences and what all artist performance you don’t want to miss. They do provide templates and display artist performance timings. In our case, we enjoyed each artist’s performance where for us local tribal music experience was something unique, and had great fun. The international bands of Indonesia were amazing in the way they were singing and dancing in their unique traditional clothes. The Japanese band performance was so unique. I have never experienced something like this. The attitude of their performance along with unique music and use of electric guitar, Oh my god I am still getting those goosebumps while describing it (I will link Ziro festival video below for all performances)
Lucky ALi – His performance cannot be described. One of the gems of India. The whole crowd went crazy when he entered the stage and started singing. Thousands of people present on the ground were singing each of his songs along with him. It was so magical it cannot be described. Witnessing our childhood hero singing in front of us is a memory I will cherish all my life. When he said good bye and left the stage, all present on the ground wanted more of him. We were shouting like anything to bring him back for one more performance. But the man had already performed for 1 hour and understandably we were explained by the authority to calm down and let the next performer perform. Well, that was one crazy night.
So this was our experience and how we traveled as a group and met so many good people and enjoyed to the fullest. If you have any questions then do contact me.
